Does Sexism Really Exist? Twitterati Speaks Up #IHaveAVoiceToo

It’s the 21st century. The century of women empowerment, with the talks on equal opportunities and equal pay. There are more women leaders, more women in Management, more women in fields like IT, Mechanical, Sports. There are more talks about the women who achieve. We have made much progress, agreed but it is a drop in the ocean and we have much more to be done. This twitter poll on Does Sexism Really Exist for #IHaveAVoiceToo campaign has some interesting results. It will also leave you intrigued.

Does Sexism Really Exist? – Intriguing Results

Off the 51 votes, 80% strongly felt sexism did exist in the world. It’s more a of course it’s there, why ask for it sort of reactions that came by. But it made me wonder. We know sexism exists, but what are we doing to make it go away? Are we learning to live with it instead of changing things? I really hope not. I strongly believe that the start of a discussion is the beginning of the change.

Sexism in Everyday Lives – Frustrating

Sexism is not just a woman’s issue, but equally a man’s too. As an overall if you look at it, women are more affected by it. But we cannot ignore the fact that men are victims too of sexism. Certain roles and work, even colors are associated with gender, which is not right at all. A man can love the color pink, cook and be a stay at home dad, likewise a woman can hate pink, not like to do any home work and is a career driven individual. None of this should or will make either of them lesser man or woman respectively.

Sexism is frustrating, both for men and women alike, because it sets expectations based on the gender and not really on an individual as a person. Even you and me do it subconsciously at times. We expect men to be strong, taking initiative and taking care of certain things, whereas we expect women to not worry or think about financial matters and think only about home and family. It’s you and me who need to change this.

#IHaveAVoiceToo – It’s time for change

Though 80% felt sexism exists, 12% said it didn’t. Am happy to know these 12% have not faced sexism, neither been sexists themselves. But then I wonder, is it true or have they never really understood the dark face of sexism or recognized it. There was also the 8% of the people who said they didn’t really know. I hope #IHaveAVoiceToo reaches atleast 5% of the people who do not recognise sexism and help them understand that they maybe, the victims or perpetrators of Sexism. Eventually help them change. It’s time we have to move ahead of asking Does Sexism Really Exist and Ask more on How do we change it or stop it?

#IHaveAVoiceToo is also a campaign, I hope this 80% of the people who agree sexism exists join together to bring in the change. We can’t just stop at knowing it’s wrong, we cannot stop until there is a change and an eventual doesn’t exist anymore. Don’t lower your voice, speak up, talk more, don’t let someone discriminate you or make you do things or be a certain way because of your gender.

    This is such a great initiative. being aware of it is the first step to getting rid of it. Of course sexism exists – it is there everywhere and it begins early from the kind of sweets children eat, the books they read, the toys they play with and goes on to the kind of roles they take on as grown ups.

      Thank you. yes it does exist, we can’t deny it. But the point is how are we going to change this situation. People like you and me can bring a change. We have too now!
